Graduated from Beijing Dance Academy in 1996, Zhang Jian joined the National Ballet of China in the same year. As the Prima Ballerina, she has performed the principal roles in almost all the repertoires of the Company, such as The Red Detachment of Women, Raise the Red Lantern, The Peony Pavilion, The Nutcracker (Chinese Version), The Yellow River, The Crane Calling, The Light of Heart and Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, La Sylphide, Giselle, The Fountain of Bakhchisarai, Sylvia, Don Quixote, as well as Roland Petit's Carmen, Le Jeune Homme et La Mort, Pink Floyd Ballet and La Chauve-souris, John Cranko's Romeo and Juliet and Onegin, John Neumeier's The Little Mermaid, Natalia Makarova's La Bayadère, William Forsythe's In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated, Uwe Scholz's Symphony No.7, Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No.3, etc. and Balanchine's Serenade, Who Cares, Theme and Variation, Four Temperaments, etc. She also played major roles in ballet works as Pas de Quatre, Le Sacre du Printemps, The New-Year Sacrifice, Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai, Attraction, Five Poems, Kazimir's Colors, The Last Paradise, Al'Heuer Qu'il Est, Close Your Eyes When It's Getting Dark, and The White Snake- The Mortal World.

She has won many national and international awards both in ballet competitions and performance, the most important of which are the Gold Medal in the 8th Moscow International Ballet Competition in 1997 and the Government Award for Culture and Arts - Wenhua Performance Award in 2013.

As a guest artist, Zhang Jian has cooperated with a number of well-known ballet companies at home and abroad, and she has been invited to dance the major roles in many ballets as well as to attend the ballet star evenings. In 1996, she was invited to perform in the French Art Festival and performed the leading roles with the Houston Ballet in Étude, Prelude, and Romeo and Juliet in 2000. Cooperated with the Hong Kong Ballet, she starred in Swan Lake in 2001 and 2004, while with the Royal New Zealand Ballet in Swan Lake in 2002, the Texas Ballet Theatre in Le Corsaire pas the deux in 2006, and the Royal Danish Ballet in Étude in 2006. In 2008, 2009 and 2010, Zhang Jian was invited to give performance at the International Ballet Stars Gala in Korea, Hungary, Slovakia and France.

As the representative of Chinese artists, Zhang Jian has made several visits together with the country's leaders and performed at many major foreign events at home. In July, 2014, she had a visit to Cuba with President Xi Jinping and danced Giselle pas de deux at the Ballet Evening Gala and visited Egypt with President Xi Jinping in January 2016 and performed the Don Quixote pas de deux at the theme performance of the Dialogue Between the Two Great Civilizations. In May 2017, she starred in Ink Painting on the Variety Show of the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation.

Zhang Jian has won lots of titles, including experts on special government subsidies under the State Council, delegate to the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and the "Outstanding Youth in Central State Organs" for 2000-2001. In 2005, she was awarded the title of "Advanced Worker of National Cultural System" and was named "Outstanding Communist Party Pacesetter" of the Ministry of Culture in 2011. She was awarded the title of "Outstanding Communist Party Member" in 2012 and the title of "Outstanding Communist Party Member in Central State Organs" in 2016. She has won the "Outstanding Performance Award" for many times in the Performing Seasons of National Art Troupes (Pas de Quatre, 2010; The Little Mermaid, 2012; Swan Lake, 2013), etc.
